16/01/07 Petrol prices over-inflated

With the lowest world oil prices upon us of the last nearly two years, there has been a question raised as to why we haven’t seen this relief at the pump.
A recent investigation launched by The Daily Telegraph has revealed that consumers could be paying up to 10c a litre more than we should be paying.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel has admitted that motorists are being taken for a ride, and are giving the profit bloated oil companies one week to cut prices or face severe consequences.

When the average motorist went to fill their vehicle up in June 2005, the world oil price was the same as it currently is today, and the motorist would have paid on average $1.08 a litre. Fast forward to today and that same motorist would be paying an average cost of $1.17 per litre.
