The Malaysian Government has today confirmed that General Motors have shown interest in the national car maker Proton.
Second Finance Minister Mr. Yakcop has stated that GM has “shown interest” in acquiring a stake in Proton, and the Government was finalizing details on several proposals they had received to date.
In a lunch meeting with the media yesterday, Mr. Yakcop stated “We have to see the best fit for Proton as the proposals were not identical. It is for us to decide.”
Detroit based GM have been said to have been in talks with Proton as far back as in 2000, but these talks did not eventuate into a partnership.
Many analysts have concluded that the joining of forces would strengthen the companies national identity, sparking new innovative models to be put into production.
