Tander shines through storm clouds at Symmons Plains |
Garth Tander has managed to take out the round win over the weekend at the tough Tasmanian circuit of Symmons Plains despite rain hitting in the early stages of race 1.
Tander, who was piloting the Toll HSV Dealer Team car number 16 was a strong performer all weekend starting with the qualifying session putting him straight to number 1 with an impressive time of 51.6803. Top 10 shootout seen Tander drop off to 2nd position after Skaife fights back for the Holden Racing Team with a session best of 52.0372. Meanwhile, the Kelly brothers of Rick and Todd managed to secure 6th and 7th positions on the grid.
The commencement of race 1 seen all teams on wet weather tyres as drivers jostled for positions in the early stages while others bided their time and played the waiting game, hoping for other drivers to make a mistake. This strategy paid off for Rick Kelly who started the race in 6th position to finish up 3rd behind the FPV car of Mark Winterbottom.
Race 2 was also full of surprises with strong performers such as Paul Morris and Mark Skaife both unable to finish the race with Skaifes luck not getting any better in race 3 where he recorded yet another failure to finish. It was Tander on the other end of scale wrapping up race wins in both the 2nd and 3rd races while the Kelly brothers both securing top 5 positions.
Rick Kelly leads the championship points table extending the gap with a 73 point advantage over Craig Lowndes.
