Since GM Automobile Designer Harley Earl conjured up the idea of the Corvette back in 1953, it has always been a front engine, rear wheel drive car. According to AutoExtremist, there is a massive debate raging about the engine layout of the next generation C7 Corvette. Engineers and planners are opting for the Corvette to move to a new direction, creating a midship platform. The opposite camp doesn’t want to see the Corvette stray from its roots and would rather keep the traditional FR layout.
Columnist Peter DeLorenzo believes that GM might choose to keep the icon front-engined, leaving the mid-engined design to a very expensive and limited run as a showcase of what GM can do in the performance car arena.
