Sun shines brightly on the 2006 Christmas Cruise

The weather could have not been better for the running of the now annual Christmas Cruise for 2006. Commodores from just about every model were represented, with some a bit wilder than others. The Street Commodores crew met up with the organizer Matt, or as forum members know him as Whit01, at the Olympic Park meeting point where there car park soon start began to flourish with an array pretty machinery that tickled the palate of just about any Commodore enthusiast.

Once everybody was briefed on the destination, the convoy then left and assumed cruising positions for the drive up to Memorial Park, located at The Entrance in NSW. Some of you may have seen a bunch of the Street Commodore crew pushing a bright yellow VL to the side of road about 20 minutes into cruise. That was the car piloted by Production Editor Stoney and I, in which an overheating and lack of fuel pressure gremlin forced us to abandon the stricken VL and hop in with Deputy Editor, Ben Nightingale in the luxurious VE HSV Senator. We then returned back on the cruise route in an attempt to play catch up, all with a very diverse soundtrack blasting from the 11 speaker (including subwoofers) premium HSV sound system.

Upon arriving at the cruise destination, there was a little confusion between event organizers and council rangers as to exactly how many cars were allowed into the grounds. An agreement was soon reached and the show went on. With the cars parked at such a scenic location overlooking Tuggerah Lake, it soon drew a crowd of locals that were more than happy to spend the afternoon in the sun and chat with some car owners about their rigs. The trophies were then handed out, with some tough decisions to be made. VL Turbo wagon ‘PSIDV8’ won Best Overall and Best ICE, ‘GMHSLE’ winning Best Engine Bay with its tidy injected 5-litre conversion and ‘STATLO’ winning Best Paint with its wild custom orange pearl. ‘BYP11G’ took out the Best Trim trophy as well as taking out the newly introduced award of Best Bling.

It was then time for the raffle to be drawn and the gates to be re-opened allowing cruisers to attempt to leave with the usual post cruise traffic jam. Overall it was very fun filled family orientated day with all proceeds being donated to the Smith family charity. A big thanks to forum member Whit01 for organizing the event, even if things didn’t go 100% to plan which included nearly loosing a wheel on the freeway!
