10/01/07 Government tightens the noose on P-plate restrictions

A new series of tough legislations has now been approved in a bid to help reduce the number of young drivers involved in shocking accidents on our roads.

From July this year, any first year P-plate driver caught speeding will have their license instantly disqualified for a period of no less than 3 months.

There will also be new passenger restrictions prohibiting any P1 license holder to carry more than one other young person in their car late at night, as well as a full ban on all mobile phone use while driving.

The new legislation which was announced at lunch time today has come as a shock to the driving community with some for and against the changes.

While the speeding penalties have stirred up their fair share of controversy, the legislations also outlines a new tougher license examination which is welcomed with opens arms by all age brackets.

While there are many holes already bought up with the changes it seems biggest complaint by younger drivers is that having such a strict penalty imposed ensures the driver of the vehicle will constantly has their eyes on their speedo, rather than where the danger is located which is actually the road. Also an area of concern was the new passenger restrictions would eliminate the designated driver system that currently exists amongst young motorists and is proving to be saving lives.
